It is the line we reach for first when someone wants a classic rug that will live under a dining table, a dog bed or a stroller and still look right in ten years. This guide walks through the choice.
What Ancient Garden is
Ancient Garden is power loomed in Belgium by Dynamic Rugs from heatset polypropylene.
The Belgian looms run at a higher point count than most machine-made rugs, so the medallions and vines hold fine detail instead of blurring. Heatset polypropylene carries its color inside the fiber rather than on the surface, which is where the stain and fade resistance comes from.
It is also the widest range in the store: rectangles from 2'x4' up to 12'x15', plus runners, rounds and ovals. That breadth is why it became the flagship: one look can run through the whole house, hall runner to breakfast-table round. Our rugs are made in Belgium and Turkey; Ancient Garden is the heart of the Belgian side of the catalog, alongside Masai, Mehari and Couture.
The patterns and how to read them
Traditional rugs look busy until you know what you are looking at. Ancient Garden uses four layouts.
Medallion
A large central motif with matching corners and a quieter field around it. Medallions want to be centered: under a coffee table, a round dining table, or the middle of a bedroom floor. If a sofa will cut the medallion in half, choose an all-over design instead.
All-over floral
A repeating field of vines, palmettes and blossoms. The most forgiving layout: furniture can sit anywhere on it, and it hides crumbs, fur and small marks better than any other pattern we sell.
Garden panel
The design that gave the collection its name: a grid of compartments, each holding its own small motif, like plots in a walled garden. Panels suit long spaces because the grid keeps its rhythm wherever the rug ends.
Border
Every Ancient Garden rug carries a border, sometimes one wide band, sometimes a main border with narrow guard stripes. The border frames the room, so keep it visible on every side. A border lost under the sofa makes the rug look one size too small.
Choosing a colorway for a room
Most designs come in several colorways, and the same pattern in ivory reads very differently than it does in red.
- Ivory and cream. The lightest, most current-looking option. Good for bedrooms and rooms with dark furniture. It shows dirt sooner, so think twice at the front door.
- Red and burgundy. The classic Persian palette. Warms up white walls and pale floors, and hides wine, coffee and mud better than anything else here.
- Blue and navy. Sits happily with grey, white and natural wood. A navy field with an ivory border is the easiest Ancient Garden rug to place.
- Charcoal. Modern rooms, or anywhere you want a traditional pattern without a traditional feel. Hides dark pet hair.
- Multi. Several strong colors at once. Pick this when the rug is the one loud thing in a plain room, then repeat two of its colors in pillows or art.
Match the rug's ground color (the big field, not the accents) to something already in the room.
Shapes and sizes, and where each one goes
Rectangles
The workhorse, from 2'x4' to 12'x15'. Living room: front legs of every seat on the rug (8x10 for most rooms, 9x12 for large ones). Dining room: table plus 24 inches on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pushed back, so a six-seat table almost always needs a 9x12. Bedroom: rug under the bottom two thirds of the bed (queen 8x10, king 9x12, or a 5x8 across the foot). Leave about 18 inches of bare floor to the wall, and between two sizes, take the larger. Runners
A runner belongs in the hallway, along a galley kitchen, or beside a bed. Leave about 4 inches of floor showing on each side, and stop short of the door swing at each end. Because the patterns repeat, a garden panel or all-over runner looks correct at any length. For something longer than the stock sizes, call 1-888-RUG-3396 and ask about roll runners cut to length.
Rounds
A round rug goes under a round table, same rule: table diameter plus 24 inches on every side, so a 48 inch table wants a rug about 8 feet across. Rounds also soften a square entry. A medallion is at its best here, because the medallion and the table share a center.
Ovals
The shape most people forget. An oval fits under a kitchen table without corners that catch chair legs, softens a boxy room, and stays clear of the toe-kick under the cabinets, where crumbs collect.
Why it works in homes with pets and kids
We call Ancient Garden a pet-friendly rug, and we mean four specific things.
- Dense low pile. No loops for a claw to hook and pull. Fur sits on top and vacuums off, and a spill stays on the surface long enough to blot.
- Stain resistant. Polypropylene does not drink up liquid the way wool or viscose do. Juice, muddy paws and the occasional accident blot up with mild soap and water.
- Fade resistant. The color is set into the fiber, so a rug in a sunny room holds its color.
- Sheds nothing. Heatset yarn does not leave fibers on dark clothes the way new wool can.
What it is not: waterproof, stain-proof or indestructible. Standing water soaks through eventually, a puppy can chew a corner, and an accident left for days leaves a mark. If you want soft, deep pile more than easy cleanup, look at our wool line, Brilliant, and keep it out of the dog's room.
Care
- Vacuum with the beater bar off. Suction alone lifts fur and grit without fuzzing the pile.
- Blot spills, never rub.
- Clean marks with mild soap and warm water. No bleach, no solvents.
- Quarter turn the rug once or twice a year so sun and traffic wear it evenly.
- On hard floors, use a rug pad an inch smaller than the rug on every side.

Can I put an Ancient Garden rug in the kitchen?
Yes, and an oval or a runner is usually the right shape. Polypropylene shrugs off drips and crumbs, and a busy all-over pattern hides what a solid color would show. Use a rug pad so it does not slide on tile, and pick a darker colorway than you would for a bedroom.
